Since 13 September 2025, the Department of Home Affairs has updated the rules around English language testing for the Subclass 482 (Skills in Demand) visa. These changes offer applicants more flexibility and expand the range of accepted English language test providers!

Here’s what it means for you:

New providers now accepted

Applicants lodging a 482 visa on or after 13 September 2025 can now choose from a broader range of English language test providers. In addition to the commonly used IELTS, PTE, OET and TOEFL, the following tests are now also accepted:

  • CELPIP General
  • LANGUAGECERT Academic
  • Michigan English Test (MET)
  • Cambridge Advanced (now listed as C1 Advanced)

This gives applicants more choice and access to testing providers that may be more convenient, cost-effective, or available in their area.

Re-sitting test components is now allowed!

Previously, you had to complete and pass all four components (reading, writing, speaking, and listening) in a single sitting. Now, for tests taken after 13 September 2025, you can re-sit just the section you didn’t pass. This means if you narrowly miss the required score in just one section, you don’t need to repeat the entire test!

This change only applies to tests taken on or after 13 September 2025. If you completed your test before that date, you still need to meet all requirements in a single attempt.

Test validity remains the same

The validity period for your test results is unchanged. You can use a valid test result from up to three years prior to the date you apply for your visa. However, if you re-sit a component, the three-year period still counts from the original test date, not from your re-sit.

Whether you’re a skilled worker preparing a 482 visa or an employer sponsoring staff, these updates are designed to reduce stress and improve flexibility, particularly if you’re struggling to meet scores in just one test component.
