From 1st July 2026, several important changes have come into effect across Australia’s migration program. These updates affect employer sponsored visa applications, salary thresholds and Government visa application charges. Whether you’re an employer looking to sponsor overseas workers or an individual planning to lodge a visa application, here’s what you need to know.
Employer sponsored income thresholds have increased
The Department of Home Affairs has increased the minimum income thresholds for employer sponsored visa programs. The new thresholds are:
| Threshold | Previous | From 1st July 2026 |
| Core Skills Income Threshold (CSIT) | $76,515 | $79,499 |
| Specialist Skills Income Threshold (SSIT) | $141,210 | $146,717 |
| Temporary Skilled Migration Income Threshold (TSMIT) | $76,515 | $79,499 |
These updated thresholds apply to relevant nomination applications lodged on or after 1st July 2026.
For Skills in Demand (Subclass 482) nominations, Labour Market Testing (LMT) should also be carefully planned, as positions generally need to be advertised for at least 28 days before a nomination can be lodged. Employers should ensure their advertising reflects the correct salary where the new thresholds apply.
Visa application charges have increased.
Visa Application Charges (VACs) have also increased from 1st July 2026. Although VACs generally increase each financial year, this year’s changes are more significant across a number of visa categories. Applicants who have been budgeting based on previous years’ fees may notice a larger increase than expected. Some of the more common Government application charges for primary applicants now include:
| Visa | Government Application Charge |
| Skills in Demand (Subclass 482) | $4,015 |
| Employer Nomination Scheme (Subclass 186) | $6,140 |
| Skilled Visas (Subclass 189, 190 & 491) | $6,135 |
| Partner Visa (Subclass 820/801 & 309/100) | $11,365 |
| Prospective Marriage Visa (Subclass 300) | $11,710 |
| Student Visa (Subclass 500) | $2,500 |
| Visitor Visa (Subclass 600) | $250 |
| Bridging Visa B (BVB) (Subclass 020) | $575 |
Government charges shown are for the primary applicant only. Additional charges may apply depending on your circumstances.
Planning ahead
If you’re planning to sponsor an overseas worker or lodge a visa application, it’s important to understand how these changes may affect your eligibility, salary requirements, and application costs.
