The Employer Nomination Scheme (ENS) Subclass 186 visa is a permanent residency visa for skilled workers nominated by an Australian employer. It offers two primary streams: Temporary Residence Transition (TRT) and Direct Entry (DE).

ENS 186 TRT vs DE – What’s the Difference?

Temporary Residence Transition (TRT) Stream

The TRT stream is designed for applicants who have already been working in Australia on a Subclass 482 (Skills in Demand or Temporary Skills Shortage) visa. This pathway now offers a more flexible and easier transition to permanent residency for skilled employees who have demonstrated ongoing commitment to their employer and hold a 482 visa in a closely related occupation for any employer

Key Requirements:

  • Usually, but not necessarily- Time spent working for multiple employers on a 482 can now count towards the ENS TRT, which means those who changed employers can count time with ex-employers on qualifying visas with the same occupation.
  • Employer must nominate the applicant for a permanent position.
  • No occupation list restrictions (any occupation can apply as long as they have held a 482 visa).
  • No formal skills assessment required in most cases.
  • Age limit: Under 45 years (some exemptions apply).
  • English Requirement: Competent English (IELTS 6.0 overall or equivalent). Including PTE

Direct Entry (DE) Stream

The DE stream is designed for skilled workers who do not meet the TRT requirements or are applying directly from outside Australia. This pathway allows employers to fill skills shortages with experienced workers who meet specific eligibility criteria.

Key Requirements:

  • Applicants can apply from inside or outside Australia.
  • Requires a formal skills assessment for most occupations.
  • Occupation must be on the Core Skills Occupation List (CSOL).
  • Must have at least three years of relevant full-time work experience.
  • Age limit: Under 45 years (some exemptions apply).
  • English Requirement: Competent English (IELTS 6.0 overall or equivalent). Including PTE

Which ENS 186 Stream Is Right for You?

If you’re already working in Australia under a 482 visa and meet the work experience requirement, the TRT stream is the best option as it does not require a skills assessment. However, if you are a highly skilled professional looking to move to Australia permanently from overseas, the Direct Entry stream provides a stronger pathway to PR as long as you have a job offer with an employer willing to sponsor you.
